So what? Somebody had to be the first one to shoot a firearm. Somebody had to be the first one to fire a cannon. It goes down the line for every development of military technology. There is no issue of "being first."
Or do you wish to have prolonged wars where the dead will continue to pile up?

You don't answer my question, so why should I answer yours? Especially since your question is fatuous.
The implication of your question is that we should all go back to spears and shields. You might like to consider that in the time frame of interest, Germany, Japan, and Russia were all researching nuclear weapons. That would have been an "interesting" world to live in.
