You are thinking in the same lines as how things have been. It either goes to 95-5% (the 4-6% brainwashed) or we lose, same ol' same ol'. The typical 50-50 system that has been historical has been controlled opposition the entire time.
Sorry, I did a bad job phrasing this. I meant "purple" in regards to having people be a little bit closer to each other in their beliefs, so people are more receptive to words and actions instead of just voting blue no matter who.
So instead of hard leftist entrenchment, we have a higher ratio of people that are willing to think critically even if it clashes with their biases.
Getting the illegals out is among the first steps to achieving this. Even a lot of the legal immigrants (my best friend lives in California and employs a lot of them) don't seem to like what has happened to their once great state.
