You know when Joe McCarthy started losing public opinion big time? When he accused Eisenhower of being a Commie. Guilt by association only. So Senator Smith (R maine) was t'd up for her famous speech that ended the investigations and with that lost the legitimacy of McCarthy's earlier work.
