The Massapequa school district on Long Island is under pressure from the state to eliminate its “Chiefs” team names and Native American names, but they are asking Trump to protect their school tradition.
District officials are asking the president to sign an executive order to protect Native American imagery for schools all across America.
“It’s about not erasing, but instead educating about Native Americans and keeping them on the forefront,” said Massapequa school board president Kerry Wachter, according to the New York Post.
“It’s the battleground here in Massapequa, but this keeps popping up all across the nation, of state educational departments banning Native American mascots and team identities,” she added.
District officials have even suggested language for such an executive order that they say would “protect the voluntary and respectful use of Native American names, imagery, and symbols.”
The names were chosen as a form of respect.. A chance to tap into the power that the name represents. Totally meant as a strong compliment. This whole episode tells you more about the people pressuring the school to change it. They demean the meaning and admiration for American Indians. I admire their school holding their ground…..
Maybe the parents of the Massapequa school district need to tell their legislators that THEY ARE THE ONES PAYING TAXES FOR THAT SCHOOL TO EXIST AND AS SUCH THEY HAVE THE VOICE IN SAYING WHAT NAME GOES ONTO THE SCHOOL! Next will the State be forcing school districts to rename their schools, "Kunta Kinte High School" and "Kizzy Elementary School"? Enough of the political correctness from the left. Let the tax payers have a say in how they want their money spent. If the Legislature cannot figure that out, then vote every one of them out of office.
as someone from this school district, I say change the mascot to a navy chief or a fire chief. keep the original face, even with the feather headdress, but real sloppily paste the corresponding new chief hat over the feathers...
