Any time. I was at NORAD during the 1st Gulf War and hated being there. I tried volunteering to go over but the commander wouldn't let me leave - he said I was needed too much (I was the sysadm for the warplans machines called WWMCCS at the time - now JOPES). We were 185% over-manned - he just didn't want to let me go. You don't need a lot of warplans to fly A-10s at night and shoot every one of the brightly-lit tanks with night-vision... Funny how that works when they are in the sun all day long.
I filled out my "dream sheet' (for those that don't know, that is a doc we used to fill out to ask the USAF to send us somewhere) and actually looked at Minot. Then I put bases in Turkey, and Worldwide remote extended - send me anywhere as long as you want. They called it a dream sheet because you were usually dreaming that you would get the assignment you wanted. I actually did.
I got Ankara, Turkey and was able to help out with Provide Comfort (helping the Kurds survive the Turks). I actually got out of NORAD after only 10 months. NORAD was cool, but it was a major PITA driving back and forth every day from Peterson AFB to the mountain, and then going thru the security. If you had your badge under your coat you would be eating asphalt at gunpoint. The Security Police loved that.
I KNOW EXACTLY what you mean...I was ONLY at Minot for 6 months (through the winter of '70-'71 and then got orders for VIETNAM...Critical Career Field--->SECURITY POLICE...ALMOST my entire basic training class ended up go SPs and then Vietnam...
Just a lil' side NOTE: if the US Air Force (Military) NEEDED A CAREER FIELD manned they did NOT care how they did it...wanted to go into cypto but NO GO!!! AHHHH THE MEMORIES!!!!!
Have a good 'um!!!! Hoisting one in you're honor...A Cabernet'!!!@@

Retired but still doing it!!!! Keeps the mind active and not sedentary!!!!!!
