In a 2012 interview with the Smithsonian Magazine, Groening clarified, "I took that name from a minor character in the novel The Day of the Locust [...] Since Homer was my father's name, and I thought Simpson was a funny name in that it had the word "simp" in it, which is short for "simpleton"—I just went with it".

First time I saw that movie I think it was "just on" the TV timer didn't kick in yet and I'm laying there all chinky eyed and half retarded... and he said he was, "Homer Simpson"...I sat up and was like, WHAAAT? rewind that shit!!!
