the addl power required to run AI cannot be met by solar or wind. I think renewables has its place, but you cannot run a country on it. The addl AI requirements will demand other sources & energy demand will continue to increase.

Mark my words, for 99.9% of us, AI will make our lives measurably worse, not better. The number of available jobs will decrease drastically, and the cost of goods and power will increase drastically. This is another gimmick that will lead to a mass wealth transfer.
Ironically similar sentiments were echoed about Industrialization and the Industrial Revolution. But Humanity adapted as we are want to do.
I personally remain optimistic at the moment
Correct, much like how in Nietzschean philosophy, man has to become an Übermensch to overcome the bureaucratic & nihilistic "Last Men". Man must, as always, continue to evolve as it always has to overcome this new challenge and become greater. Such is the nature of life.
AND what some don't REALLY GRASP is that the hardware TO RUN AI is extremely expensive...I have a motherboard that is going to be used for AI research...the computer module sits in the center of the arrary where the memory is...and THE MEMORY BOARDS HAVE TO BE A MATCHED PAIR ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE INSTALL...THERE CANNOT BE ANY UNMATCHED PAIR...AND one has to buy the memory in "PAIRS"...how's that for waggin' the dog!!!!!!!
Mini nuclear reactors and 'cool' fusion are on the near horizon
Probably for a lot of “Work from home” people.
If you look. Many of the Data Center/AI deals are coming with provisions to license the companies to build their own Power Stations separate from the public grids.
And now that the blind opposition to Nuclear is fading. That opens up an extremely potent option to supplement our Energy Grids.
