Following the release of the 2024 US Human Rights Report, which laid bare South Africa’s deep governance and rights abuses, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) fired back – dismissing the report as “inaccurate” and “deeply flawed.”

🔴 Attacking the Messenger Instead of Facing the Facts Rather than addressing the core allegations – from politically protected corruption to racial discrimination and extrajudicial killings – the ANC chose to attack Washington. DIRCO accused the US of bias, pointed fingers at America’s own human rights record, and clung to selective praise from the UN for the Land Expropriation Act. That “critical step,” celebrated by the UN, is nothing more than state-backed seizure of private property without compensation, targeting minorities under the guise of “historical justice.”

🔴 A Hollow Boast About ‘Robust Institutions’ DIRCO boasts about “independent” institutions and “robust processes” holding leaders accountable. The reality is starkly different. Chapter 9 bodies are politically compromised. The judiciary is not immune from creeping politicisation. Cases of police brutality, political killings, and violent unrest drag on for years with no meaningful consequences. In many cases, those with ANC connections are untouchable.

🔴 Selective Outrage and Convenient Amnesia The irony in DIRCO’s statement is impossible to ignore. They slam the US for leaving the UN Human Rights Council while conveniently ignoring their own catastrophic failures: Farm murders ignored or denied at the highest levels. Racist rhetoric from ANC officials left unpunished. Institutionalised corruption crippling essential services.

🔴 Why the ANC is Panicking This is not just a rebuttal – it’s a sign of fear. The ANC knows the US report carries weight internationally. It can trigger sanctions, cut foreign investment, and erode Pretoria’s carefully crafted image abroad. Their speed and ferocity in responding proves the report hit a nerve.

🔴 The Stakes for South Africa The ANC has no intention of changing course. They will continue to deny, deflect, and distract – until outside pressure forces their hand. The 2024 US Human Rights Report is more than a document; it’s a weapon that can be used to rally international scrutiny and action.
