Russians that are in Russia generally like him. All of my family that lives in Russia love the guy. Even my parents who haven’t lived in Russia since ‘89 like him.
Back in 2013, a Russian woman in my church decided to go back to Russia to visit her family after many years of not seeing them. I will never forget her coming back to the US and telling all of us how popular Putin was in Russia. None of us would believe her, but she stuck to her story. She said I know what I saw and I know what I felt he has done so much for Russia and they love him there. We had such a hard time of it. She was also hurt that we didn’t believe her.
I seem to recall something about a Russian naval blockade of US ports during the American Civil War and the payment for their tacit assistance was payment in the form of the purchase of Alaska. I may be wrong, because google said so.
