Russians that are in Russia generally like him. All of my family that lives in Russia love the guy. Even my parents who haven’t lived in Russia since ‘89 like him.

Putin wanted to join NATO after he first became president. NATO needs the Russian boogeyman to try and justify its existence though.
As I remember my history, they sided with the Nazis, surrendered to the Russians, gave up a significant amount of territory to the Russians and then were pushed to fight with the Russians against the Nazis.
