In 1860, the white population of the South was about 8 million, and the slave population was about 4 million. Free nonwhites were about a quarter million. Nearly 1 out of every 3 people were slaves. It hardly matters if they were all owned by 1.6% of the population.
The South came together for other reasons having to do with being in the path of war, but the war was started by Southern Democrats to break from the Union in order to continue as slave states.
Great after action excuse. Completely glosses over the fact that about a third of the Southern population were slaves. Boosting the Congressional representation of the South. And that the election of an abolitionist president would portend new states becoming non-slave, shifting the political forces in favor of national abolition,
Except when the South decided to abrogate the Constitution and throw it off.
Abe had other concerns. I never said he thought it was about slavery. For him it was about rebellion and the destruction of the union. I said the South started a war of rebellion and secession in order to get out of a union that was likely to go abolitionist with the entry of a few more states. With the election of an abolitionist president, they figured there was no advantage to waiting.
If you want to bring up a constitutional issue, be my guest...but so far, you haven't. The rebellion was for the exact purpose of overthrowing the Constitution...and creating a new nation and a new Constitution.

The war was started because the south was done being run over for a million and one reasons,
Abe's excuse to stomp them into submission with borrowed money was "slavery".
The south followed the constitution, the Yankees did not.

Abe said himself he didn't care about the slaves.
Good job glossing over the document you apparently didn't read..
Would you like to explain your last sentence regarding the south and the constitution?
