I've heard that argument so often. And never seen it show up as being relevant to the solution of a crime. It certainly has no affect on black-market guns smuggled into the country. The anti-gun people just want to invent impediments to treatment as an ordinary item of commerce. Suppose a toaster is used in a crime (blunt instrument in a homicide)...do we insist on registration of toasters?
