Had a sixth grade teacher who came out of retirement to take our class for 3 or 4 months. Sent the most popular girl in our class to the principal. Saw him walk between two rows of boys' desks and cuff each up side the head. Miracle happened. They all turned into angels. Taught us how to diagram a sentence. From that simple process, I got 100% on every grammar test I took including college. Useful skill.
My daughter once asked me what they did to bad kids when I was growing up. I sadly had to tell her there really weren't any bad kids. I suspect everyone else's parents were like mine. If you got in trouble at school, it would be nothing to the trouble you'd be in when you got home.
It taught the parts of speech, so one could use this knowledge to punctuate and not put adverbs in an adjectives' proper place. May I recommend Strunk and White? 98 pages, including the index. Entertaining read. E.B. White wrote a great American classic and used that talent to write a writing and style guide.
Yes, it does help with the parts of speech. One of my favorite things in English class. Had it in the curriculum I taught in our Christian school. So all my students learned to diagram sentences. They excelled in English and could write and use punctuation properly. It's one of those things gone by the wayside like cursive writing. Replaced with non-sensical subjects that will have no benefit to the students academic learning.
Good for you! My sophomore English teacher required one book report a week. And no one could fake it because she apparently had read every book in the library and remembered details from every one.
A sentence diagram is a pictorial representation of the grammatical structure of a sentence. The term "sentence diagram" is used more when teaching written language, where sentences are diagrammed. The model shows the relations between words and the nature of sentence structure and can be used as a tool to help recognize which potential sentences are actual sentences

And they never actually said those words. But we knew. Osmosis, I guess. Grin.
I never understood the value of diagraming sentences. What a pain in the ass to learn, but we had to.
