It wouldn't do half as much as if the same amount of people went out and actually did a tangible good deed of some kind every single day. I care about actions, not thoughts and prayers.
Ultimately, both are required. Prayer is critical because seeking God, and connecting to God, and connecting to God's heart is the root from which a tree of good actions can emerge.
Seek God in your heart, through prayer and other means, and then practice goodness to all in your surroundings. It doesn't need to be an 'either / or' proposition.
Our action are nothing compared to Gods actions when we pray. I care about seeing Gods faithful hand not a bunch of self appointed good deeds. Both are preferable but the prayers are the most important.
