I don't think that's true, but maybe she would have survived, a path not taken.
It really depends where in Ukraine she came from.
I guess, since she moved to the west rather than Russia, that she is from the west of Ukraine, which is actually reasonably safe for civilians unless you get sent to the front or publicly disagree with the government.
This is a guess though and I recognise my incomplete knowledge of the situation.
