For the newbies. We talked about this image a lot when it first came out.
There are 10 stars (one on his upper eyelid) and 7 stripes. (if going red stripe to red stripe like Old Glory) 10+7=17
Note that the round area around his nose and the fold of his left cheek looks like a "Q".
From left to right it goes from dark to light.
Why cant it be both?
Also not sure where you get 7 stripes from
Because I can count and I have no memory of this image being released around a 9/11 anniversary.

edit yes I was just looking at the red stripes....so there are either 7 or 8 sripes as his ear could be a stripe as well as it is even bigger than the first red stripe
Look at the neck/chin area. From left to right.

Okay fair enough....although if one can count the partial eyelid star as 10 then someone else might say that the right side ear is an 8th stripe.
I believe it can be interpreted multiple ways and unless Trump and company specifically say otherwise , insisting that its one way over another is folly and hubris.
That is the beauty of the design.
there are 7, the white stripes (one grey) count as well.
I like how they did the eyebrows on the right to mimic the plumes of smoke coming out towers
