Christianity was born in a pagan empire that killed Christ-followers for refusing to bow to the emperor or to false gods. Rome embraced blood sport and public immorality — a playground for demons — and yet the Gospel spread. Even the martyrs’ deaths were not wasted; God used their witness to draw thousands more to faith (John 12:24).

This reminds me that the war we face is not new. The battle began when humankind chose to let evil usurp God’s role as our teacher (Genesis 3). From then on, evil existed alongside us. You cannot know both good and evil without evil having some place to stand. That is the root of the struggle.

But evil is not God’s equal. It has always been on a temporary lease. Its entrance into our world came through human doubt and denial — through choices, not design. Christ was the eviction notice: he replaced doubt with belief, denial with accountability (Romans 5:18–19). As the true heir, he left no wiggle room. Now evil is not a rightful tenant but a squatter.

The ancient lie is that God and evil are on the same scale. They are not. God has all power; evil only works by convincing us otherwise. Its aim is to fill the spaces where God’s presence has withdrawn with human souls to toy with until judgment (Revelation 12:12).

The greatest question for me has always been, why would anyone turn from God? He is so loving, so healing, so good that a moment in his presence resets everything (Psalm 16:11). I don’t fully know why, but I can imagine that separation would be agony, turning once-bright beings into creatures of infinite hate.

And here’s where the heart of it lies: even those who fall, even those you might despise, are still God’s children (John 1:12). Like a good parent, God protects but also lets us grow. A toddler isn’t allowed to play in the street, but an older child is taught how to cross. But what if a child is kidnapped into traffic? You don’t love them less — you fight to rescue them. Whether they were lured with candy or groomed to see their captor as good and you as evil, they are still yours. The rescue may take time, even reprogramming, but the love and the claim remain (Romans 8:38–39).

Now to the heart of your question — how do we protect ourselves?

I wish I had the absolute answer. The honest truth for me is: I can’t. I can’t protect anyone from demons. I can only call on the One who can. There are many ministries that deal with this, and there are helpful practices, but ritual alone( I don’t mean spiritual rituals I mean the definition of good spiritual habits discipline) isn’t the solution — presence is. I don’t mean that what we do in the natural is useless; it can help. I only mean it’s not the main thing. We can pray every morning ( ritual) but if those prayers are insincere we may not be getting much out of that. I do believe however that creating space for God to meet you absolutely must be of some good against the enemy.

I’m not an expert at all. I’m just a child of God trying to understand things far above my pay grade. I thought through these things to address the lies the enemy was using against my walk; your journey may require something different, and that’s OK. What matters is this: you are a child of God, and He will give you the answers and strength you need.

Here’s what I’ve learned and what seems to help: •Fear feeds the enemy. Demons thrive on fear and try to push us into fight-or-flight. Scripture repeatedly says, “Do not fear.” (See 1 John 4:18 — perfect love casts out fear.) •Presence matters. Time spent seeking God in prayer, worship, and Scripture creates a zone that darkness avoids. It fills you with peace and clarity so you can see true direction. •Practice helps, but presence protects. Simple spiritual disciplines—prayer, reading Psalms, singing worship, calling a believer to pray with you—reorient your heart and body to truth. •You don’t have to do this alone. Invite a sober, mature believer or your pastor to pray with you. If symptoms suggest medical or mental-health issues in someone you encounter (hallucinations, sudden personality change, suicidal thoughts), get professional help—often spiritual care and medical care work together.

You said we have little time. Respectfully, I don’t think that’s true. We have exactly the time God intends for the steps He’s asked us to take — not more, not less. Walk the next obedient step in front of you, and He will give the rest.

Wow that was a lot and I hope helpful again I stress I am absolutely not an expert and I am reaching out as a child of God a sister in Christ also seeking but not willing to see a need without attempting to meet the need. Ugh sorry. I know you asked for practical advice and I gave you a wordy explanation on who I believe we are to God. For me that is practical advice. I believe ALL our ability to do anything against the enemy in the natural is rooted in our identity as his children. We have authority over the demonic but it isn’t ours it’s his. I think when we don’t root ourselves in that we can easily be lured into a position to be taken out of the fight or worse misused. From my experience the demonic could care less who I am or what I do but they definitely want nothing to do with my Lord. They definitely want to avoid my Heavenly Father. To me Jesus is love to them he is a terror. There is absolutely power in his name for that reason. We can’t do battle as humans we will lose every time but as Children of God Brothers and Sisters of Christ Fully armored- we literally can’t lose. Every person we teach to find their identity in him becomes not just another warrior but another division capable of calling in 1000 angels to the fight. Two or more can call in 10,000. That grows exponentially with each. Demons flee when a true believer acting in his God given authority and properly prepared takes the field.
