I can offer one correction -- the private plane did not turn off it's transponder. It disappeared from one online service (ADS-B), but was tracked the entire way by a different service (Flightradar24).
When the original 'they turned it off' tweet went out, Flightradar24 responded saying that they had the entire trip -- and showed a screencap of the entire roundtrip for that plane.
That does not prove that the plane 'wasn't involved', it just means that they did not turn off their transponder.
