This is, at a bare minimum, exactly the kind of exchange you would fabricate if you collaborated with at least one other person, and wanted to insulate and protect the other person or people before turning yourself in.

Which isn’t to say it’s not potentially much deeper than that, but rather at a minimum this reads like cover for the boyfriend.
