I'd bet that ABC has been losing money on Kimmel just like with Colbert, probably for at least the last 10 years. Now that the USAID money train went off the rails and ABC has to pony up their own $$ to subsidize Kimmel's crap show they are eager for any excuse to unload him.
There is probably a "misconduct" clause in Kimmel's contract that would make it easy to dump him and put someone else in that time slot that will actually make them money.
