His entire career has been committed to marginalizing conservatives and especially Christians. If he's going to change sides, there's a lot more involved than just declaring "I'm one of you guys now!" Like David Horowitz after promoting communism to becoming a Reaganite, his penance would need to include admitting his fault and committing to discrediting the left.
