It accomplishes two things; it keeps the DS in check (think mirror) and it helps us as Anons understand the plan on a deeper level, if we can get past the noise of shills, arguing, and irrelevant discourse. I strongly tend towards both events having an element of sting.
ie. I think the black hats planned the assassinations and the white hats scuppered it, but re-used the event for psyop plan purposes.
