Cut all their free money, even if they had green cards.
When my mother immigrated here from Sweden, they were told they would be deported if they went on welfare. They also had to have an Americen sponsor that would help them out instead of the tax payer.
An immigrants back in the day wanted to become "American" as soon as possible, having their children only learn English, for the most part; none of the balkanization that has been happening for the past 30 years where there are enclaves that are essentially colonies of whatever country all the people in those enclaves come from.
My grandmother was either an infant when her parents came from Sweden, or was born shortly after they immigrated to the U.S. She didn't know much Swedish, but in her final couple of years, after a brain aneurism and resulting dimentia, she spoke quite a bit of Swedish and remembered things from her childhood she hadn't possibly ever remembered until then. The human brain is amazing!
My mother was born and raised in Stockholm and came her when she was 9,so she speakes it fluently. Probably the last immigrant to come over on a boat. I know she had a green card number so low that immigration never saw a number that low.

I used to know the Lords prayer in Swedish and that's all I ever learned.....
