I need to find god, i need to get right. You ever feel like an absolute garbage human? What steps do i need to take. Organized religion always felt so weird to me. But i need purpose.

How do you pray? How do you feel like you are truly talking to someone? A lot of the time it feels empty like I'm talking to no one. It's lonely. I wish I could have an experience much like those I see where people say they really have had an experience. Additionally I feel like I often ask of him in regret or in some ways selfishly even though I dont mean to only call on him when I stray.
The fact that you are asking is the first step...
Go to a quiet place where you are all alone. Say out loud:
Father, I need you. I want to be in Your Presence. Please guide my path. Let me know Your Will for me and make me wise enough to hear You.
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33
I started by asking God for signs, evidence that He was real. Usually in my simple bedtime prayers. He answered, unmistakably, and unexpectedly.
The Lord's Prayer is a good place to start. Add personal items at the end or in the middle, as they occur to you, based on the day's activities or simply what your heart needs. 🙏
I will work on this. I feel ashamed I typically try and talk because I've done something to feel guilty about, then I feel guilty as if I used him to feel less guilty. It's a bad feeling
When a baby learns to walk, every attempt is encouraged even when the parents know he's not ready; the parents don't count how many times he falls; they don't get angry. But everyone celebrates when he takes his first steps on his own.
God sees us as a loving parent would, knowing that, like the baby, we will fail many times before we are happy with ourselves. Like the loving parents He already loves us, and wants us only to do our best. When we finally turn to Him and arrive in His arms, He welcomes us celebrating our victories and without counting the mistakes.
Look for something to be grateful for, everyday. Stop and thank God for whatever it is that made you smile. It will help you grow closer to God and it is worship. I pulled over the side of the road a couple days ago to admire the hills of trees with changing leaves and said aloud Dear Heavenly Father I am so grateful for the beauty of this earth, thank you for blessing me with the gift of appreciation for your creations. I hope this helps you.
That's a good way to look at it. I'll try that more often.
To hear him read the Bible. I suggest the gospel of John. He loves people but rejects rebeliousness. Be humble and keep seeking Him. You will find Him. He desires your fellowship like you desire His.
I find the Psalms helpful with that, as they run the full spectrum of emotions, from praise of God for His Majesty in creation, to the psalms where he calls for judgement on his enemies. (some are written by David, others by Asaph ...) There are also plenty of psalms that express repentance and other aspects of relationship to God. I find when I have no other words to say, there is almost always a Psalm that expressed my feelings well.
Start reading the Bible. Start with the New Testament first. Listen to sermons online. A podcast I enjoy is called “to every man an answer”.
