If it makes you feel better longer hair gave extra bonus points to Spartans and Vikings for battles.

But the real reason why longer hair was advantageous in ancient warfare was the extra protection it provided the head when a helmet and cloth were worn.

Also longer hair provided protection from the sun for long marches for the neck and shoulders.
