One big difference:
The confederates were also trying to escape captivity themselves, but out of relative innocence.
The democrats are trying to escape captivity as well, but out of guilt and hatred of being held accountable.
Many actions taken by both sides in the CW were defensible from their position through natural, and righteous means prior to the whole war being made, after the fact, only about slavery.
The only real saving grace of modern democrats is how much they’ve allowed themselves to be subjected to propaganda.
