What he is saying is that instead of eliminating slavery, we've traded black slaves for migrants slaves. The democrats are trying to keep the migrants illegal so that they are easy exploited: lower wages, poor working conditions, easy victims of human trafficking, etc. That is why the democrats push bringing people here illegally instead of pushing to make it easier for migrants to come here legally.
I say all the time that I oppose open borders because I am a bleeding heart liberal. I do not want these migrants exploited by coyotes, shady employers, etc. I want them to have all the protections that Americans have, and they get that by being here legally.

Agreed that illegal immigrants are exploited. A more open border, like we had for centuries, would allow someone to come here legally and work, returning when the work is done.
We all know that coming to the US legally is unduly burdensome. The democrats solution is to ignore the system. Democrats want the borders to remain open so that people can come and go freely: along with human traffickers, drug smugglers, and other nefarious characters.
If the democrats actually cared about the well being of both migrants and constituents, they would make it easy to legally come and go.
