My employer was hit pretty hard. Both ticketing systems, data warehouse and all it's feeds, parts of the sales/order entry system.
Sorta vindicates those of us who have always questioned the calculus of the cloud, especially so since it coalesced into just a handful of companies with terrible reputations for customer service.
Too late to change back though. The internal infrastructure has already been ripped out, sold off for pennies on the dollar, and the staff are long gone. What's left of the legacy systems just keep chugging along despite minimal maintenance budgets and overall disdain from management.
Many genealogy sites down or very slow this morning, FamilySearch, WikiTree, Findagrave and more. Better to have data distributed, rather than putting all your eggs in one basket.
I think its time to move away from AWS something more open source would be nice or something linux based web servers. Linux web servers are the gold standard for hosting websites, APIs, and applications. They're lightweight, secure, battle-tested, and 100% free. Perfect for replacing AWS EC2 + Apache/Nginx stacks.

Management sees no problem with using floppy disks to back up critical system data. Upgrade request denied!

I'll bet most of AWS's servers are Linux, but that's not the point; the point is who does all of this:
Builds a building to store all those servers
Provides significant security - Data Centers are obvious targets for innumerable reason
Provides energy / power / cooling - server racks generate massive amounts of heat & need huge amounts of cooling
Internet - any data center / server hosting location obviously needs at least 2 redundant internet connections, and huge amounts of bandwidth
Staffing / maintenance / etc; even Linux servers crash, Hard Drives or motherboards go bad, etc
Basically; There's a LOT more to it than just what OS your server(s) are running.
:-)
Saar, what is wrong? I just upgraded the bloody bitch bastard?
