Good shooting, but tactically wrong... NEVER go hunting an intruder -- bear or human -- in your house. Take up a defensible position (like on the stairs where you can see the area below, in this case) and let the perp come in to your kill zone. Still though, I admire how he did not hesitate to shoot, because hesitation can get you killed.
Your correct, I'm sure, but every time I have hear a noise in my house, I did just like this guy.
SEAL Teams sayings:
Don’t run to your death.
In SEAL teams, this is not a metaphor. When conducting raids that put you in close-quarters combat scenarios, restraint is often the best approach. Once you breach and gain entry to the target, being slow and methodical often wins the race. Hence the phrase, “Don’t run to your death.”
But you made me think of that incident where a loving young daughter hide in a closet, and made some kind of noise that got her fathers attention. He got his gun and when he opened the door, his daughter jumped out, and he shot her. It was one of the saddest things I've ever heard, and one of the best lessons too.
Follow your own advice, and the Seals too. Don't run to your death. When you start prowling around an area, even your own home, you are entering the enemies' kill zone... make them come to you and enter YOUR kill zone. Hallways are death traps, make them come to you. Stuff can be replaced, your life cannot.
I already know which points in my house that I will take up and lie in wait, you could easily do the same. Scout your own home for defensible spots that reduce your exposure and where you can simply lie in wait for someone inside your perimeter, your house. They will come, looking for loot or a victim, they are already high on adrenaline and God knows what else, so turn that to your advantage and let them come to you in your defensible position.
There are two tactical ideas, cover and concealment. Cover is a place where you can get behind that will shield you from gunfire. Concealment is hiding in a spot where you can't be easily found. Of the two, concealment is considered the best.
Find a spot where you can't be seen, and prepare to unleash Hell against an intruder... no conversation, no "I have a gun!" or "Is anyone out there?" Nope, no conversation...just spot the intruder coming into your kill zone and do a mag dump on his (or their) ass.
They aren't there for conversation or debate, and they are ready to kill you dead if they see you first.
DO NOT HESITATE! Once you have the perp(s) in your sight, drop them. You should have already have one in the chamber and the safety off at the first noise you heard. The first and last thing the perp(s) should hear is your shots going off.
Good thing he grabbed they rifle first....

Nobody will ever f___ with this guy.
I wonder how the bear got in his house...
Small bear, maybe through the doggy door. This is why you should never, ever have a doggy door.
Turn lights on.
That is the first thing I think I would have done. Equal the odds. Everyone is in the light.
Needs some Leroy Jenkins flare.
