The narrative goes that a lot of them have realized how bad of a deal it is, but did so too late to avoid the serious negative consequences of the decisions.

I still don’t buy that this was caused by social contagion. Maybe in part, but something else surely helped push this out, and we need to know what that was so it can’t happen again.
