For context:
The Great Aurora Show of May 10, 2024 was most visible on the night of May 10–11, 2024.
This peak was the result of 3 (Much smaller) Solar flares.
X-1, X-2.25, & X-1.2.

This has the potential to be spectacular.
It should be all over the news over the next few hours.

Again, this one is the 39th largest solar flare ever recorded. The three flares that triggered the spectacular May 10-11 2024 Aurora aren't even in the top 50.

What's the real future, John?

If I want to explain time travel and black holes to people better than this post does, what path do I use?

I get email notices for all solar flares, and this notice said the time was 10:04 UT. We have had X10 or X11 flares in the past few years, since I started monitoring.

The earlier flares were on 11-9 and 11-10

The one on 11-9 started at 7:10 UT and ended at 9:11 UT and was X1.7. The one on 11-10 started at 9:07 UT and ended at 12:22 UT and was X1.2.

The flares go straight out from the surface of the sun, so if the flare isn't nearly dead center of the disk, it will miss us.

An X5.1 flare is nothing to be frightened of. I would be more worried if it were X20 or greater. Then you're getting closer to a Carrington Event that really would shut down the half of the world that got hit and be a big problem for the rest.

Solar EMPs only affect long wires, as there is only a lower frequency component. So anything connected to electric lines, phone lines, and copper TV cable lines would get fried. Large transformers, which aren't even being made in the US, would fail and couldn't be replaced for years. Also, many of those locations were formerly serviced by rail lines which are gone now. Those huge transformers had to be hauled by train.

Only nuclear EMP will kill freestanding electronics, such as your car electronics or your cellphone. Of course the cell towers would be gone anyway, so the cellphone wouldn't be of use either way, except for photos and information during a solar EMP.
