Here's a better idea: Let car manufacturers create a basic, no-frills car that has the basic safety equipment, but more on the lines of an old VW, Bronco, or Jeep. It will get you from point A to point B reliably, made of rugged stuff, and go when you need it.
It might not be pretty (although it could be with a little bit of styling) but it would sell for a price that people on limited means could afford.
This is exactly why I'm hanging on to my 2010 Ford Ranger. No frills, no leg room (I don't care, I'm short), very reliable, easy on gas, and I can haul stuff.
I loved my '68 Bronco.

How about a simple car or truck with no bullshit technology. No bullshit cafe standards. Just a comfy car i can drive. With phones all you need is bluetooth and a screen for a map.
I'm old enough to remember when one could drive a car that didn't have screens and our phones were on a table at home where they belonged, right next to the phone book.
