At a place today who was using Starlink as one of their internet sources. I plugged in directly to see what’s up. I was able to get good ping replies to google and good name resolution. Around 40 ms round trip. Don’t know if they color packets (qos) but I was impressed. It goes to the satellite then it travels to a providers edge somewhere (PE router)
The issue was if I went to a website it would take minutes to load. They must use crowd strike or something in-between for only dns. Maybe they try to do that preserving cache thing for websites—I have never liked that approach in modern internet but they will want to preserve as much bandwidth to/from the internet as possible.
This place had 2 connections to/from internet to this one being bad was pushed to a vendor meet with whoever starlink uses—I don’t think very many people even understand basic ethernet routes these days though—from IT to providers… much like the movie idiocracy… transport is only that-transport. The 3 main transport these days is fiber, over the air (cellular or microwave), and satellite.. some rural areas will still use dsl but I do not envy those techs having to maintain outside copper still.
I am suspecting it’s part of this outage today but I left it as that for a later time.
