"Allowed Pence to be placed by Bush Sr." is most accurate. They (military) knew who he was and why he was there from the start. They also knew how to deal with him.

Bush Sr. controlled Republican Party and got Pence on ticket as his inside-man "backup" as part of the deal to allow Trump to have the GOP nomination. Similar deal to 1980 where Bush Sr. was "placed" on Reagan's ticket for identical reasons by power broker at that time. Also, similar MO: something "happens to Trump", and Bush Sr.'s man moves into control, just like with JFK, Nixon, and Reagan (failed until 1985).
