Note that the article uses "Vanishes" to describe what happens when an aircraft switches off it's ADS-B or other self position reporting capability, mid flight on purpose.
So the idea that it simply "vanishes" is simply Bravo Sierra? Just the self position reporting being turned off. Which, we you think about it would make perfect sense for the "Doomsday" aircraft.
Fun fact. The E6-Bs replacement is supposed to begin slowly entering service next year. Derived from the C-130J. At the moment dubbed the E-130J Phoenix II.
The "Looking Glass" mission refers to the US Air Force's Operation Looking Glass, a Cold War-era project that used an airborne command and control center on a Boeing EC-135 aircraft. Its primary function was to provide a survivable link for commanding U.S. strategic nuclear forces, ensuring command and control in the event ground-based facilities were destroyed. The aircraft was on continuous airborne alert from 1961 until 1990 and its function has since been superseded by other systems.
Which is entirely different than "Project Looking Glass".
Not sure why this is a story? This happens all the time. They go off civilian tracking (shut off transponder) if they're doing any kind of possibly classified work. Also, project looking glass has zero to do with what is called a "looking glass mission".
Upvote for using Looking Glass in a non sci-fi way. This show is amazing.

This is what I was wondering too.

Operation Looking Glass is cited in the story, Project Looking Glass is something completely different.
Exactly. Keen observation.
Keener observation...The article says "Looking Glass" with no reference to Project or Operation.
Possibly even more keenererer observation...
The article says the "Looking Glass" mission.

That is... much keenerer! 😂😅
even more reason not to conflate the two
True
A quick search and you see they are one and the same.
Another thread stated one of these disappeared a couple/few days ago…inquiring minds wanna know!

I don’t think it disappears I just think it has people from a witness protection program? Or maybe important people in a mission.
Doesn't seem like this should be that big of a deal.
ANG helos fly over our house regularly with their transponders off, and we're near a small airport so there's plenty of private aviation traffic.
Big bird like this turning off it's transponder over the ocean doesn't seem like a newsworthy event.
