The Jesuits, particularly Francisco Ribera and later Manuel de Lacunza, developed Futurism in response to Reformation accusations that the Papacy was the Antichrist, reinterpreting biblical prophecy to place the Antichrist and end-time events in a distant future rather than in the present Roman Church. This Jesuit apologetic framework was adopted and systematized by John Nelson Darby in the 19th century, forming Dispensationalism—a theology that divides God’s plan into distinct eras, emphasizes a secret rapture, and envisions a future literal restoration of Israel. This prophetic schema, rooted in Catholic Counter-Reformation thought, directly paved the way for Christian Zionism by legitimizing the idea of a future, geopolitical Israel playing a central role in end-time prophecy.

In response to the Protestant Reformers' central accusation, namely, that the Papacy was the Antichrist, the Jesuits developed a theological strategy known as Futurism. Spanish Jesuit priest Francisco Ribera, in the late 16th century, proposed that the Antichrist had not yet appeared, and that the prophecies in Daniel and Revelation, including the rise of a future world ruler and the rebuilding of a temple in Jerusalem, would unfold in a distant future just before Christ's return. This theory relocated the fulfillment of end-time prophecy from the present Papacy to a hypothetical future figure, thereby removing the papal tiara from the beast's brow.

Ribera's work, published in his Commentary on the Apocalypse, is widely recognized as the foundational moment for modern Futurism.

This Jesuit strategy was further developed by Robert Bellarmine, who expanded Ribera's framework into a full apologetic system, emphasizing that the Antichrist would be a single, future, Jewish man who would arise in Jerusalem to deceive Israel, shifting the focus from Rome to a future secular empire. The Jesuit Manuel de Lacunza, writing under the pseudonym Juan Josafat Ben-Ezra in the early 19th century, rebranded this Futurism as a prophetic work that included the idea of a secret rapture and the restoration of national Israel, lending it credibility among Protestants. This work was translated into English by the Scottish preacher Edward Irving, who spread Futurist ideas through prophetic conferences, creating a spiritual seedbed for what would become Dispensationalism.

John Nelson Darby, Anglo-Irish lawyer and theologian, systematized these Jesuit-derived ideas in the 19th century, creating the formal structure of Dispensationalism. He restructured redemptive history into distinct "dispensations," positioning the church as a temporary parenthesis in God's plan for Israel, with Christ's return leading to a secret rapture followed by a seven-year tribulation and the restoration of Israel. This system, which divides the people of God into two parallel tracks—one for the church and one for the Jews—was not a discovery of revelation but a theological inheritance from Catholic apologetics, specifically the Jesuit Counter-Reformation strategy.

The same theological framework that protected the Papacy by pushing prophecy into the future also laid the foundation for Christian Zionism. By placing the restoration of Israel in a future, literal, and central role in God's plan, Dispensationalism provided a theological justification for the modern state of Israel and the belief in a future, literal rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. Thus, the Jesuit invention of Futurism, designed to deflect the Reformation's accusation against Rome, ultimately contributed to the rise of a theology that not only redefined prophecy but also shaped modern Christian support for Zionism.

John Nelson Darby had no direct institutional ties to the Roman Catholic Church, but his early theological environment and personal connections reveal significant Catholic proximity. Darby was ordained in the Church of Ireland, where he initially held high church views akin to Anglo-Catholicism, emphasizing liturgy and sacraments. His elder brother, William Darby, openly aligned with Roman Catholic claims, and both brothers signed a copy of the Decree of the Council of Trent—an authoritative Catholic document—suggesting familial engagement with Catholic doctrine. Additionally, Cardinal John Henry Newman’s brother was a strong supporter of Darby, and Newman himself invited Darby to Oxford, indicating a level of intellectual and personal connection between Darby and prominent Catholic-leaning figures. While Darby later rejected Catholicism and became a fierce critic of its institutions, these early associations helped shape his theological outlook, even as he developed a system—Dispensationalism—that ironically preserved Jesuit-developed Futurist prophecy to defend Protestant eschatology.

It would not surprise me in the slightest to discover that Darby only feigned his later anti-Roman positions and was an agent of Rome throughout his life.
