About 30 years ago when I was in my 20's, I was working on my car at my parents house in my childhood neighborhood. I heard a commotion up the street and then noticed a kid that had graduated a year before me come hobbling down the street.
As he got closer I could see that his shirt was nearly torn off, he was barefoot and had scratches on his upper body and face. He saw me and started calling me by name begging for me to take him for a ride while trying to catch his breath. I said I couldn't so he grabbed me by the shoulders and pushed me up against my car. He had been crying and was now begging to borrow my car. I told him it was a manual and that he really needed to calm down.
I asked him what happened and he kept repeating that he "Had to get out of here" and that "They were coming for him". I assumed that he meant his parents or the police as I saw his stepdad come running down the street a few moments later.
As soon as he turned and saw his stepdad jogging towards him, he took off further down the street and through the woods. The dad's clothes were also ripped and it was obvious the two had been fighting. I yelled over to the stepdad asking if he needed help but he only asked "Which way did he go?".
10 minutes later I heard sirens but never saw anything in the police log afterwards.
I didn't know it at the time, but after high school he had moved to California, changed his name to a more glamorous sounding Hollywood name and was a member of Screen Actors Guild. He had roles in several projects and commercials.
Less than a couple years after that weird run-in with him, he mysteriously died at home at a young age. Even stranger, his cousin who had a similar name and had graduated with me, also died under strange circumstances. Everyone that knew him seemed pretty tight lipped about what had cut both their lives so short.
Only a few years ago did I start noticing the similarities to his sad ending and what often happens in Hollywood.
