Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

I’ve never given dogs bones. I can’t imagine a dog in the wild not chewing on bones. I think poultry bones splinter and dogs should not have them. Beef are probably alright, but I’m not an expert. I say do what you think is best for your dog. Heck I trust people’s opinions on here quicker than I trust veterinary experts. The vet talked us into having our 1st dachshund’s teeth cleaned just after she turned 11. She died a few months later. We always knew she had a heart murmur, but never had any problems. I can’t prove it but I believe anesthesia at her older age didn’t help the situation. I don’t trust vets! They are just as bad as doctors. Our second dachshund that’s about nine has seizures about 1-2 times a year usually in the fall when weather changes. I believe the vaccine caused that. If the vet knew we feed the dog like we eat, they would die. He stopped eating the food we had been making for years & will only eat burger, cheese, bacon and pork rinds. We didn’t set out for him to be carnivore like us. Oh well we don’t miss cooking and bagging his food. I’m sure he would love a bone😀
Thanks. The vaccines for dogs make no sense to me. Why is a 5 pound dog getting the same vaccine as a 50 pound dog? I think we really need to look at vaccines for animals next and see if they’re causing more harm than good.
Absolutely! They only make sense from a financial perspective for vets & pharma. Yes, hopefully that’s next. Also testing on animals should not be allowed. By the way if your skin care products are sold in china they are most definitely tested on animals. They don’t care about their people and we know how they feel about animals. My mom & grandma went to china in 88. They talked about the dogs and cats in cages waiting to be cooked by the street food vendors. I think I would booked my return flight early. Because our dog had a bad reaction to rabies it’s not in-forced. Decades ago our new kitten almost died after getting rabies vax. She was in vet hospital several days. It pisses me off if I adopt a cat or dog from a rescue group, etc they are fully vaccinated. I grew in the 70s we had several stray dogs over the years and one cat. We didn’t worry about them being vaccinated. The only time the cat went to the vet was spayed after two litters & when she got sick from old age. I drove her myself in my early twenties. I had that cat since I was nine. The vet asked if I wanted to bury or her they take care of it. They put dead pets in a garbage bag and sent to the landfill. As ai always say, I’ve never trusted the government even though I wasn’t fully aware way back then. The veterinary system doesn’t care about you or her pets. Nothing but a money racket. Unfortunately we have to deal with them if the dog gets sick. My husband and I have had my daughter’s dog almost a year. He won’t sleep all night with them and has emotional issues after my first grandchild was born. He’s jealous. After she got pregnant second time we took over. I love him but I never want responsibility of a pet again. We both do everything we can for him. He’s almost totally blind. Some days he eats really good other days he won’t eat and throws up after an having empty stomach too long. Although, I tell my husband if he goes first I’ll have a house full of cats😀 Hope all goes well with your dog. I saw the antler comment, great tip. Don’t know why I didn’t think of this. My husband hunts deer & looks for antlers in the winter. Animals chew those up. Probably good healthy stuff in them. I think you can buy them online.
Oh, that’s nice that that dog stayed in your family. They’re like babies they do get jealous when there’s another sibling.
Oh yeah especially Dachshunds. That’s the only type dog I know. They never stop being a puppy. We have treated our pets like they were our children. Our first dog lived almost twelve years and we never took a family vacation, together. We don’t feel like we missed out. That dog was our life! She & I went on trips with my mom, brother & nephew. Hubby kept the dog. Cats are easy you can leave for a while. I’m thankful we are able to do this. I know my daughter misses him, but she knows her kids are here priority now. I’d put him to sleep before I sent him to live with strangers. I understand sometimes people are met with impossible situations and have to give up their pets. Years ago I followed Elvis the dachshund, now it’s ernie n elvis the dachshunds on instagram. Elvis became paralyzed and about the same time his owners had a new baby. They kicked him outside and some how this man & women adopted him. I understand your child should always come first. But this was evil, in my opinion. Elvis has doggie wheels and an Elvis license plate. I don’t know these people, live in UK. They have given him a great life.
