*disclaimer: I know nothing of Vince Gilligan's political stances. I know nothing of Rhea Seahorns either. (Though I have my suspicions) So I'm doing this quick analysis from a blinded perspective.
(Gilligan priors: Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul)
*Spoilers, but you're not going to watch it anyway
Pluribus is basically a hybrid of a zombie movie and kind of a Twilight zone episode (a few intertwined) like "Where is Everybody?" and Richard Mathesons "I am Legend", or the film version "The Last Man on Earth". But doing some ruminating on the show after forcing myself to finish it, I have a theory that ties into our current situation.
Quick Synopsis: Something happens basically overnight, that changes all inhabitants on earth to share one hive mind. And what's on their mind?
Ned Flanders style niceties. That's right, these people have the gall to be overtly.... Nice and helpful. Problem is, Carol didn't get the memo. She didn't get infected. She's still the most miserable Karen on earth. This character will annoy you. She's supposed to. In fact, the blurb about the first episode is "“The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness.”
They're not hiding that fact. She is miserable and wholly unlikable. / So not to get bogged down in specifics, Carol ends up being only 1 out of 12 people on earth who weren't infected. She meets the other 10 (the eleventh has refused all contact with anyone of the" others") to try and rally them that it's up to" us " to save humanity.
To save identity, and independent thought.
"THAT'S WHAT MAKES US HUMAN! "
They are nonplussed by her pleas. There are no murders, no wars and endless supplies. Why would they want to bring back the old way?
(*Interesting side note-when Carol berates her personal chaperone (an other) in furious rage, ALL the others go into spasms worldwide, because hivemind. Carol is responsible for thousands of" others" deaths because of this. They forgive her of course, and tell her they love her just the way she is )
Though the others are nice, cannot tell a lie, and will give Carol anything she asks for (even a live grenade), they also see and hear everything she does. They also mine her mind so they can give her the same experiences she loved in the past. Even experiences between her and her deceased girlfriend. Which of course feels as an utter invasion of privacy.
The entire season Carol tries to win them (uninfected) over, though she has bouts of enjoying her new comforts. The 12th uninfected human is finally discovered and he feels the same way as Carol (long subplot).
So basically this is what we have
Carol is either the right, which seems more of where we're at, or the left which i don't think holds as much water. Because the hivemind mentality is definitely on display as a symptom of the lunatic Marxist left . So possibly huge COVID lockdown connotations there as well (I wonder if Gilligan wrote this during lockdowns)
Then we have the extremely helpful others as either a swipe at AI, or more likely, the greater good collective loving lunatics who know what's good for you better than you do.
And Carol is the human who fights for the free will and liberty of humankind. And she's wholly unlikable, which could be another shot, but aimed at the conservative/Trumpian constitutional movement.
Yeah, you know they are right, but man are they annoying assholes.
So that's my short version of what I think could be on display in the show. It's a much more interesting show in retrospect than sitting through it.
Thanks. I don't watch fictional movies, anyway. Documentaries are my thing.
My TV is a digital picture-frame so I only watch landcapes and family gatherings.
it's an entertaining show, but not SUPER original as hive mind scenarios have been done before several times.
I've watched the first four episodes, which for me is really good as I have a pretty high bar when it comes to stuff like this. It's interesting enough for me to keep watching just to see where it goes.
She asked for a nuclear bomb to be delivered to her house so as to keep them all away from her when she found out that they were trying to find a way to make her a part of the hive mind by her own DNA. She figured out that they lied to her in the beginning where she found out they were finding a way to indoctrinate her without her permission, because they had said in the beginning that she had to give her permission.
Yes I know but I didn't want to spoil the entirety of it
I'm well aware of the in's and outs
