As of January 18, 2026, Florida has not removed all vaccine mandates statewide.
While Governor Ron DeSantis and Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo announced plans on September 3, 2025, to end all vaccine mandates—including those for school entry—this effort is ongoing and incomplete. The state has initiated administrative rulemaking to remove mandates for certain vaccines under the Florida Department of Health’s authority, such as hepatitis B, varicella (chickenpox), Hib, and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, with changes scheduled to take effect in December 2025.
However, vaccines required by state statute, including those for polio, diphtheria, measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), pertussis, and tetanus, remain in place. These statutory mandates cannot be repealed without action by the Florida Legislature, and as of November 26, 2025, no legislative bill to repeal these requirements had been filed.
The next legislative session, beginning in January 2026, will be critical for any broader changes. Until then, the legal framework for most childhood vaccine requirements remains intact. Public health experts warn that removing mandates without replacement safeguards could increase the risk of preventable disease outbreaks.
