Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are required for advanced tech. In a modern war, your ability to engage is limited by your ability to produce advanced tech, planes, drones, probably very soon robots. We have enough on hand to run without supply maybe...a year depending on the engagement. China controls most of the worlds refinement and supply. 70-80% by estimates, and they plan to take Taiwan which makes 90% or so of the worlds chip supply. If Trump wants to be able to stand up to China when this showdown happens, we have to have diversified supplies of these materials or China wins the game of Civilization by taking taiwan and throttling REE exports. If you were wondering Trumps angle, this is likely to head off China at the pass so an invasion of Taiwan is as strategically unappetizing as possible. The REEs aren't even the beginning of the wealth there. Energy is literally going to dictate the future and one of the major REE deposits in Greenland has got -alot- of uranium, and nuclear is likely is what's going to fill in during the AI/Quantum push going on right now until fusion hits viable scale. This means uranium prices are already skyrocketing, and likely will continue.
