Europeans are different than we are...the ones I've known have less ...I think the word I want to use is "sensitivity" toward human suffering.
I've always attibuted it to them having two World Wars fought on their soil. Frequent death, lack of food and basic comforts, willingness to bend moral codes to survive -- these things injure the soul.
An American can look at these paintings and be struck by the complete disregard for humanity depicted. We have a different life experience. We value people. They look at it and see it as no big deal. People die every day don't they? They think to themselves -- it doesn't affect me -- not my concern and go on with their lives. The ability to care beyond themselves is missing in most of the ones I've known.
I have, for many years, cut them slack because of the wars and the circumstances they lived through. Perhaps, I was wrong about that and the time has come to be a little less understanding. At what point do you say -- you've had more than enough time to get over PTSD?
The evil people paint these. Evil people put them on the walls. What kind of population ignores them in public buildings?
