A streamer becomes the first IRL streamer to successfully livestream from Antarctica using personal Starlink. He isn’t sneaking into restricted zones or doing anything covert - he’s simply using his own satellite internet.
Moments later, a ship officer steps in and says the device is being confiscated and will only be returned after they leave Antarctica. He’s told no independent internet devices are allowed - not just on this ship, but on all ships, and not even briefly on land. The ship’s internet is then cut off.
When he asks why, the only explanation given is “cybersecurity.” No law is cited. No specific threat is explained. The rule is described as absolute and non-negotiable.

- No independent connections.
- No exceptions.
If Antarctica is just ice, science, and penguins… why is independent internet treated like a threat?
Because Antarctica is not what we've been taught. Go research Admiral Byrd. What he found there before the international treaty shut the place down is mind-boggling.
Exactly this. Didn't he even end up saying something to the affect of "we have to worry about the threat at the poles [...]".
Also, it's wild that all these billionaires want to explore space, which is extremely expensive and unlikely to find anything important within their lifetime. Same with exploring the ocean. But exploring Antarctica in comparison would be cheap and highly likely to discover mysteries of humanity's past, it's insanely resource rich, and you would be utterly famous and get all the prestige that comes along with it. And yet, no billionaire even wants to fly their satellites over to take pictures of it even.
How strange.

I consider this often within the context of the contrast between sacrifice and individualization. Society does not function if no one is willing to provide the service of employment, yet no one is capable of becoming an individual unless they shed the chains tying them to the limited existence of specialized service.
