The problem with the smart meters is that they monitor instantaneous usage, meaning they can tell when your a/c kicks on, and probably tell about other electrical devices.
Decades ago, the electric company in my former town mandated that they install controllers on our heating and cooling system so that the city could cut our system off remotely during peak hours. Somehow, the doofus who connected ours didn't do it right, so ours was never shut off a single time.
There is presently a lawsuit by the citizens of Cuyahoga Falls, OH who were forced to get them as mandated by their local government. The suit is currently in a preliminary phase.
