Here's the answer to the serious questions that nobody wants to hear.
They do it for two reasons: pure raw sadistic pleasure and enjoyment of the feeling of being violently evil; and for the infusion of psychic energy and power they derive from mercilessly torturing the most innocent of beings. There is no insidious atrocity so horrific that they won't do it, as long as the suffering of the victim is maximized.
