I disagree that the Nicaraguan Contras destabilized Central America, or that they were ever likely to be used against the U.S. Instead, they were reacting to the already-advanced destabilization from the Communist power grab of the Sandinista regime.
Circumstantial evidence to support this is that, despite the Contras funding over many years, none of the dangerous U.S. gangs are Nicaraguan.
This is relatively old history so it's probably not worth a big debate, but just wanted to register my disagreement on the topic.
