Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

Human creativity is already protected by copyright. It gets protected even when you use digital tools and you dont even know how to use a brush.
AI is a tool and getting it to generate what you envision sometimes requires huge amount of prompting and tooling and by itself a very creative process.
When digital media came, human creativity moved from the point of putting paint on paper to using pixel tools.
With AI, its shifting human creativity from using pixel tools to actual imagination.
Using photoshop did not overwhelm actual paintings, even though people buy a lot more digital art.
Same with AI.
There is a line that needs to be drawn. Would you agree with that Statement?
Absolutely
On this note, what positive effect has AI had on society?
As far as I can tell it's close to zero. AI just destroys creativity, encourages complacency, discourages physical work ethic, feeds a slop driven spectacle of audio/visual media, and exacerbates existing problems such as bot farms and the like.
At what point does the scale tip towards positivity or at the very least balance out?
I agree with that statement, but I also strongly agree with bubble's take on art and the artist.
I come from an underground computer art background, and I've seen AI generated art that is truly imaginative - truly impressive art.
What we see in the mainstream, and even here, typically doesn't reflect much artistry. Sure, a large percent is slop which cash conscious entities are using to replace illustrations, but conversely I suspect that, just like non-AI visual arts the cream will inevitably rise to the top.
These are just my gut reactions; I don't have any skin in the game, don't use AI tools myself, and have done any real research into the topic. But I pick up the zeitgeist, have the history, and still cling to the belief in merit based capitalism although I admit that the system has been perverted to extremes in almost every field.
