As opposed to saying nothing and keeping some element of surprise? He may be baiting a reaction of sorts, I don't know. My only point was I'm not taking what he said at face value.

You can't take Trump literally - but take him seriously. By creating an environment of ambiguity, it gives Trump more of an advantage. This strategy has always worked well for him. You are correct in that by keeping others off balance, he does bait reactions.
