I understand that but in my mind perhaps it should be "updated" to fit our country. We swear to God on the Bible in a court room, or when taking office, why can't we do that for this oath? I'm no doctor nor will I ever be but I can say I would have a hard time taking this oath to swear to false gods. It's not my hill to die on here, just my two cents that nobody asked for.
Ah ok. Like I said, I'm no doctor. I had a simplified more generic type oath as an EMT. Perhaps I should have researched a little before commenting. Anywho's, carry on! Thanks for clarifying.
Hippocrates, known as "The Father of Medicine," lived 400 years before Christ. Apollo and the other "gods" were the only deities known to him.

Modern doctors no longer use that version of the oath, but an updated version that has the same principles concerning ethics, patient rights, etc.
I did not intend that for its literal meaning, but for the spirit of the Hippocratic Oath, which boils down to, "First, do no harm."
