Yes, it's a reminder of the seriousness of the situation. He suffered a torturous death for the individual wearing the cross. Presumably they know and understand that and that is why they are wearing the cross, because it has meaning to them and they are thankful.

Things that make an introspective person go hmm and humble themselves.
